TELEPHONE CBT MASTERCLASS - Manchester
24 October 2008

The ANXIETY UK is holding a one day workshop which will review the evidence for the use of telephone CBT and will provide a masterclass in its practical application. The workshop will be of particular relevance to ANXIETY UK therapists already delivering therapy by phone, but also to those CBT practitioners who might consider working in this way in the future. Delivered by Professor Karina Lovell (University of Manchester) and Nicky Lidbetter (CEO, ANXIETY UK), the workshop will provide a valuable insight into the research currently being undertaken in this area and delegates should leave the day with enhanced clinical skills in telephone based CBT intervention.
To book your place on this workshop please visit our online shop at: http://www.anxietyuk.org.uk/shop.php.

The ANXIETY UK have produced a new booklet for people suffering from panic attacks. It contains useful self help info, sources of support and information about panic. The booklet has been produced as part of a pilot study that involves the training of A + E staff in panic, following feedback about poor responses to the condition at a local emergency department. We will be implementing the training, and launching the accompanying booklet in the next month, but you saw it here first! Just look in the recommended resources of the panic section.

Radio 4 programme on social phobia

BBC Radio 4 has launched a new series of "Am I normal" - And you can get it online via the web from anywhere! "We expect health professionals to tell us if we’re 'normal' or not, but how do they decide where to draw the line between someone who’s OK and someone who isn't? Vivienne Parry investigates." Programme 1 - Social Phobia Are those who are merely shy and retiring being made to believe they have a mental health condition or are we failing those whose acute anxiety in social situations blights their lives? 'Social phobia' was first identified as mental health condition in 1980. Now according to some estimates, up to 1 in 8 people in the US and the UK has this chronic and enduring mental health problem. Some believe it's the most under-recognised and under-treated mental health problem of the modern age - the cause of many people’s depression and alcohol addiction. If you cure the underlying social phobia, they say, the associated depression is much less likely to recur. Others, however, feel that psychiatry itself has gone just a little bit mad – re-branding ordinary shyness as a mental illness. Is it normal to be afraid of public speaking? Or nervous about going on a date? When does not knowing what to say to someone become a mental health problem? Vivienne Parry finds out. You can listen again via the bbc website. www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/science/am_i_normal.shtml

ANXIETY UK awarded Investing in Volunteers Quality Standard
12/1/2007
Investor in Volunteers

The ANXIETY UK has recently achieved Volunteering England's Investing In Volunteers Quality Standard, in recognition of the excellent work undertaken with volunteers.

Danny Hulme, ANXIETY UK Chair said:

“Our volunteers are the most critical part of our organisation; it is they that are on the frontline in our efforts to help those with anxiety disorders and it is volunteers who enable the ANXIETY UK to offer such a diverse and comprehensive range of services to sufferers. It is very satisfying to see that we, in our turn, are striving to deliver the best working environment possible for them.”

Investing in Volunteers is the UK quality standard for all organisations involving volunteers. It is the only quality standard that has independent external validation with a UK Quality Assurance Panel that makes recommendations to the UK Volunteering Forum, the awarding body.

Investing in Volunteers aims to improve the quality of the volunteering experience for all volunteers and for organisations to acknowledge the enormous contribution made by volunteers. In order to achieve the award, the ANXIETY UK was assessed against a range of best practice standards and proved to excel in all aspects of working with its volunteers.
